Scholarships for post-graduates and researchers in Finnish language

Centre for International Mobility (CIMO)

  • To be a non-Finnish post-graduate student or researcher who carry out a research outside Finland.

The Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) offers scholarships to non-Finnish post-graduate students and researchers who carry out their research outside Finland. Applicants should have at least a Master’s degree. Scholarships are available for post-graduate studies or research in a Finnish university or for short study visits.

For scholarships of 3 to 12 months, the amount of the scholarship is 1.500 /month.
For scholarships of 1 to 4 weeks, the amount of the scholarship is 375 /week.

How to apply for a scholarship of 3 to 12 months

The host university should apply for the scholarship on behalf of post-graduate students and researchers. The scholarship candidate should contact the host university about the application in good time before the deadline and send them:

  • a research plan (2 to 3 pages; introduction, goals, work plan, work methods, expected results)
  • CV, including information about previous studies, publications, previous visits to Finland
  • a copy of degree certificate (minimum requirement Master’s degree).

The Finnish host university will send the application form with annexes to CIMO. CIMO will process the application with relevant experts and send the decision about the scholarship to the applicant university.

Scholarships of 1 to 4 weeks

The scholarship can be used, for example, to

  • visit archives
  • attend seminars
  • conduct interviews
  • meet with supervisors.

Pure conference trips are not eligible for the scholarship; the visit must include other type of work related to the applicant’s studies or research, too.

How to apply

The post-graduate student or researcher should apply for the scholarship independently at least two months before the planned beginning of the scholarship period.

The application should describe the purpose of the visit and its significance to the applicant’s studies or research and the contents of the seminar, if applicable.

Annexes to the application

  • applicant’s motivation
  • research plan
  • reference from the research supervisor
  • CV, including information about previous qualifications (minimum requirement Master’s degree), possible previous scholarships to Finland, previous visits to Finland

If an applicant has not received confirmation about a place on a seminar or other relevant information regarding the scholarship application on time, they can apply for the scholarship conditionally: they should state in the application that the confirmation is forthcoming and will be sent to CIMO later. If they will not get the confirmation, they should cancel the application.

The application with annexes should be sent to the below address:

CIMO/Suomen kielen jatko-opiskelijoiden ja tutkijoiden apuraha
PL 343
FI-00531 Helsinki

After the scholarship period, post-graduate students or researchers must send CIMO a free-form report, describing the main achievements.
