Journalists working independently or on the staff of news organizations (for-profit or non-profit) are eligible for grants from the Fund for Environmental Journalism.
SEJ membership is not required, but all applicants must meet SEJ
If your work involves lobbying, media relations or public relations on environment-related issues you will not be eligible for membership in SEJ. Please review requirements if you are not sure.
Applicants for FEJ story grants are limited to receipt of one grant per two-year period and two grants per five-year period. Prospective applicants who have served on the Society of Environmental Journalists board of directors, staff or FEJ grantee selection jury must observe a one-year blackout period before applying.
SEJ’s Fund for Environmental Journalism is glad to announce the next round of competition for FEJ grants to journalists and news organizations. Applications opened APRIL 15, 2016. Grantees will be notified no later than August 10, 2016 and grants paid as soon as possible following agreement on terms of the grant.
For the June 15 round, one topic category is open for Fund for Environmental Journalism grants up to $5,000. Proposals are invited for journalism projects covering:
“THE POLITICS AND ECONOMICS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE U.S."
This opportunity has been made possible by a 2016 grant from The Energy Foundation to the Society of Environmental Journalists.
If your project does not address the designated topic for this round of FEJ competition, please do not apply this time. Your proposal cannot be reviewed or funded. Coverage project grants from the Fund for Environmental Journalism of the Society of Environmental Journalists can be provided only when opportunities are funded in advance through foundation grants and individual donations. SEJ will announce new categories and new deadlines when new underwriting can be secured. Thanks for your understanding.
Fund for Environmental Journalism story project grants 2011 – 2015 have been funded by the Cornell Douglas Foundation, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Heinz Endowments, Grantham Foundation, Wyss Foundation, and individual members and friends of the Society of Environmental Journalists.
Prepare ahead to submit all files in PDF format. Do not exceed maximum word count for narrative and page limit for support documents.
Grantees will be notified no later than August 10, 2016 and grants paid as soon as possible following agreement on terms of the grant. Funds can be used for story expense incurred only after FEJ grantee agreement is signed and returned to SEJ with IRS W-9 tax form.
SEJ Members: Fee waived
Non-members: Fee will be $40 (If you apply and are approved for SEJ membership during the grant application review period, you may apply the fee to first-year membership — also $40. Please note that this is a completely separate application from the grant application.)
SEJ provides critical support to journalists of all media in their efforts to cover complex issues of the environment responsibly. SEJ addresses its mission and vision through effective programs designed by and for journalists who produce environmental coverage. Benefits and opportunities of programs and membership will be extended to journalists on varied beats, to students and all those who will be expanding and defining the field in years to come.
