The program is open to all United States citizens or permanent residents;
Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduates in U.S. Colleges or Universities as of the application deadline date. Successful applicants must make arrangements to receive their fellowship and stipend funds from their educational institutions;
Students must have a G.P.A. of 3.0/4.0 or better (recommended), and are considering pursuing a graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.). Students with physics, material science, chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, or engineering majors are always encouraged to apply. There may be research opportunities for students with other majors.
Every year the Resource Center for Science and Engineering (RCSE) of the University of Puerto Rico through the Puerto Rico Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (PR-LSAMP) coordinates the attendance of undergraduate students for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), one of the most prestigious national laboratories in the United States.
SURF students receive stipend, housing and travel allotments (as needed), and supplemental funding for students commuting locally to NIST not eligible for housing. Funding for students comes via a federal grant issued to the school from NIST. Students who complete the full 11 week program will receive a $5,500 stipend. Students that can not make the full 11-week program will be paid at $500 per week.
Additionally, students accepted in the SURF Program residing within the local commuting area and not eligible for NIST provided
housing are entitled for supplemental commuting allotment up to $500 (at the amount is at the discretion of the accepted laboratory).
The only real expenses that students should expect to pay out-of-pocket are personal entertainment and food. To help control the food expenses, the student apartments have a full kitchen with dishes, utensils, pots and pans. There are free continental breakfasts daily!
This is a competitive program that reviews both the university and student portion of the application to determine the final list of SURF awardees. The NIST SURF program will support approximately 100 students.
Once the student is accepted by the NIST-SURF program, the student cannot cancel their participation. Every student must have an active email address, since all communications with NIST will be through email.
Attached you will find copy of the application and general information regarding the internship and available research laboratories.Applications CANNOT be sent independently to NIST, only the Resource Center for Science and Engineering is authorized to process and send the applications received in our office from the date of this announcement until Friday, February 5th, 2016. This will allow the RCSE to evaluate and prepare all the necessary documentation needed to submit to NIST. Applications must comply with all requirements and specifications in the NIST SURF 2016 application form.
