Be an international student commencing full time enrolment in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at this University;
Be a student undertaking study in a subject area identified by the University as within the areas of its current and emerging research strengths;
Not hold a research qualification regarded to be equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorate degree, or, if undertaking a Research Master's degree, not hold a research qualification regarded to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Master’s degree;
Not have held an Australia Award scholarship within two years prior to commencing the IPRS;
Not be receiving a scholarship for which course tuition is a component under any other scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution;
Not previously have received an IPRS, unless the previous IPRS was for a Master by Research degree that you have completed and you are now applying for a doctorate research degree.
The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) scheme is funded by the Australian Government and provides tuition fees to top quality international postgraduate students who wish to enrol in a research degree at Australian universities. The IPRS is very competitive and awarded to approximately 30 students each year. Applications are assessed on academic merit and research potential. In addition to the IPRS, the University of Sydney awards an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) to IPRS holders. The APA provides a stipend/living allowance to all IPRS recipients. For students commencing in Research Periods 1 or 2, completed admission applications must be submitted via Sydney Student by 31st July of the previous year. For students commencing in Research Periods 3 or 4, completed admission applications must be submitted via Sydney Student by 15th December of the previous year.
To be considered for an IPRS, a student must:
- To be considered for both admission to PhD and IPRS, you must upload and submit all supporting documents required for your course application by the deadlines below. RPI forms should be uploaded with supporting course application documents. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Students are considered for IPRS and USydIS at the same time, and the awards have similar benefits.
- Students may be considered for the scholarship before they have received a course offer, but must hold an unconditional course offer when the Postgraduate Awards Subcommittee meets to endorse the list of scholarship awardees for the upcoming round.
- Students without unconditional course offers at this time will not be offered a scholarship and may consider deferring their course to the next available intake in order to be considered for IPRS.
